Things that go Thump in the Night

It makes life interesting to have something to look forward to. Did I say interesting? I mean tolerable! Now that the summer is winding down and fall is upon us, my thoughts turn towards spring and my birthday! Can you believe it? Joe has been on the computer looking up rates for a stay in Key West!!

This is going to be a calm weekend. Nowhere to go, no events have been planned that need to be explored, no parties to attend, no races to run, no bands to chase around, no road trip to Louisville. Sigh. Guess I will have to tackle that pesky attic that has been calling me for about 10 months to clean up. Cripes!

Now next week end is a different story. Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson are having a concert on Friday night (I hope its Friday!!), the Woodland Arts and Crafts Show is all week end, the State Fair is on in Louisville, and we are having a family Birthday celebration on Sunday! All in one week end! It is always like that. Feast or famine. I plan to attend them all!

On a lighter note, I think this house may be haunted. It is not that old, maybe 60 years, but I am not familiar with its history. Maybe something happened here, I don't know. Several months ago I awoke early in the morning (around 430am) to the sound of something in the bed room. In my groggy state, half sleep and half dream, I thought it might be one of the mice that enter our home every once in a while. As I came to a little more, I sensed it above me, making noise on the ceiling. Flying mice! I must have turned on the bed side lamp and HORRORS!!!! a bird was flying around the ceiling in concert with the hanging fan! I leaped out of bed and drew the bed cover over my head as I ran out in panic. A BIRD!! The thing flew towards the window and that was the last I saw as I slammed the door shut behind me. Well, as slammed shut as a 60 year old door can get.

When I calmed down enough to make coffee and think about things...how did that bird get in the house? Maybe its a bat? (we have found a bat in here before)...so I crept back to the room and opened the door with broom in hand to defend myself.....and nothing....nothing.

I have thought about this for several months. Where did it go? Was I dreaming?

Then last night, right as I was falling asleep, in that once again half sleep half dream state, I felt the presence of someone....hovering over me. I felt the pressure of someone, and once again in my dream state thought it was Bridget climbing in bed with me.

Then came to and realized Bridget is now 24, not 4.

Creepy. But not enough to really scare me. Or frighten me. Just make me aware that there is a lot of things I can not explain away.

Has Joe noticed anything?  Sounds spooky to me.

Never be afraid of dead people. Only live ones can hurt you! Sounds as if a squirrel made it's way on your roof. Being a total night person, I know all of the evening sounds and sometimes the squirrels sound REALLY LOUD or even some other animal while walking on your roof. Mice can sound like they weigh 100 pounds. LOL!  Probably an animal but if not, nothing to fear. : )

Dylan Nelson play in a town near here next weekend.  I'm hoping we'll be able to go, even if it is at a venue called The Big Chip.

Where are Dylan / Nelson playing?  I might go see them if it's not too far away.  I last saw Willie three years ago at the State Fair...he is so cool...

Key West?  One of my most favorite trips!  So laidback, so unpretentious!  I would go back in a heartbeat.  I've encountered a ghost or two in my lifetime.  One was a very scary incident and I had a witness to the event so I knew I wasn't crazy.  The other was my grandmother and I loved seeing her...very comforting, very loving.

Ewwwwww...I'd say that it found its way out, or settled in the draperies, but as a long-time night person, I really can't. Might have been a dream. Not to worry though, birds are a good thing (put that Alfred Hitchcock stuff out of your head, gf!)  :)

Cripes, I don't like that kind of stuff ... I don't even want to think what I would do.  Good for you though, sounds like you're out of the house lots.  I used to envy people who seemed to have incredible free time come the weekend.  I think I felt a little better once I told myself it was at the expense of something else.  I swear, I don't know how people do it!  Come the weekend, I'm struggling to get the stuff done that didn't get done during the week (all of the grocery shopping, cleaning, laundering, and finally a decent meal).  I would love a weekend of just sheer frolic and play, but I don't think I've ever done it without sharing it with some form of guilt.  Is it something you do when the kids get grown or what???  Race

Just tell the ghost to go away. Tell it to get out. Just like you would an unwanted person. If it is a ghost it was a person once. So just tell it to get the heck out. My grandma told me once she saw a few ghosts. So I asked her if she was scared..she said, "If I'm not scared of the living why would I be scared of the dead?" Now...if you had bats  and you are going to clean that attic please becareful. OMG Bats would scare me out of my wits. Also..if you are going to clean the attic..i bet it's very steamy hot up there. So make sure you drink a lot of water before during and after. The willy nelson concert sounds like fun. Only a week away. You got something fun to look foreward to. : )

Mary :)

Ut oh, well...I would be there in a minute to check it out if we were closer. I have an interest in these things. Keep me posted if you can. In the mean time don't worry, if there is something there it is probably just curious.

Always, Carly :)

Well I hope you're going to plan that Key West vacation AFTER hurricane season.  Of course, I bet the rates for a hotel with no roof are really a bargain.
Ghosts, eh?  I read someone else's journal talking about ghosts which prompted me to spill the beans about our spook a while back.  You might be interested to read it... http://journals.aol.com/quroboros/AFoolontheLake/entries/1032
Your experiences almost sound more like some kind of psychic interference.  Do you have a history of being 'sensitive' to such things?  ¤Holly

OK.. if not for the lightheartedness in the beginning of this entry, I would be totally freaked out by now.  Eurgh.  I've always been fortunate to live in fairly new houses, but we did once have some strange happenings in an apartment we lived in as kids.  Scurry stuff - weird stuff.  I don't necessarily believe in ghosts - superstitious nonsense - still, when those weird things happen, I can't help but get the willies.  Eeek!  LOL

Happy Early Birthday!!  2 whole seasons early, yeah, but it's never too early to start, right?  LOL  :D

I think you make something real if you believe it to be so. As such, I blame that half awake, half asleep state on things like that. You know. Where you think you are awake but you're not really. Ghosts can't fight that kind of logic. ;-) ---Robbie

Geez, I was just gonna say, you out to check out the entry from Fool on the Lake, but I see she already left a comment here with a link to her entry.

Sweet lord. Between the two of you, I am beginning to get a serious case of the heeby-beegies.

I have no doubt that there are realms out there with which we have only limited and sketchy contact.  The "half-dream, half-wake" state that you talk about...  There was one apartment that we lived in when we were first married, that I had all sorts of experiences with this foggy half-aware state.  At the time, I thought it was ME, but I've not experienced the same phenomenon anywhere else...  Lisa  :-]

oooh...that is creepy.  Isometimes get my 3 year old son confused with my teenage and grown daughters when he needs attention in the middle of the night. It's like dja vu all over again.

You have the most interesting social life of anyone I know ~ running marathons, going to concerts, pub crawling from Ireland to Key West and when all else fails, being visited by birds and bats and ghosts-that-just-want-to-cuddle in the night.  I envy you.  How do you do it?   :)
