REASON NUMBER SEVEN

Irish Dancing

How do they do that? Long ago, the dance masters would travel from village to village and teach the art of Irish dancing. The dresses are to die for! Costing from $700 upwards. The black and orange and green dresses are usually the outfits of a dance school.  When one is a soloist, they have intricately beautiful costumes in varying colors with designs from the Book of  Kells.

I heard (maybe while in Ireland) that the Irish dance hold their hands rigid against their sides as a symbol of the bondage still inflicted upon their country.

I really enjoyed the dances with the hard shoe. When they would kick thier legs and pass thier feet, they were somehow able to click the heels together.  I also loved the sound of the STOMP on the floor!

The hair is trippy. (wig)

I wonder how long it took their mothers to do that hair?

I had a friend whose 2 daughters and niece did the Irish dancing. I loveed it and they always "performed" at family weddings. I love anything with Celtic knotwork. In our church is a family where the late 60s aged mother dances like this at the huge St. Patrick's Day dance where we have a band with members from Ireland.

This brings to mind the famous Mary quote, "dancing the jig like a trained monkey." You killed me with that one and I'll always laugh out loud when I see Irish dancers, not in disrespect but in thought of an Irish dancer with a rocking sense of humor....

You really got your money's worth out of this Festival.  I would have had to spend the entire weekend there in order to see and do everything.  Lisa  :-]

Well, Mary - you've certainly convinced me that it's great to be Irish! I'm admittedly envious. What do I get at a Hungarian Festival (besides my pockets being picked....)?? Gypsies and Vampires......(lol)        Jon

My Becky took Irish dance for two years. I loved it, she hated it. The dances are spectacular, the dresses are absolutely gorgeous, but pricey. It's great to be Irish. (I'm French, Dutch and Native American, too.)

They're so young!  The similar dancing I saw at the English Faire here last year was done by adults.

I heard that the hands were kept still because dance was often taught while the children were in crowded keeps, safe from plundering Angles and Saxons.
