SIX DAYS IN CANCUN

I survived Hurricane Wilma.

Early in the summer Joe made reservations at an all inclusive hotel on Cancun for October 19th thru the 22nd. We shrugged off the danger of the tropical storm Wilma actually becoming a hurricane.

My sister had already been through Katrina and sooooo..........

I have the most incredible story to tell about the six days. We just arrived home (moments ago). I want to make sure I have the rights to my story and that I am protected.

I need to know that AOL will not step forward and say since I wrote it on their Journal Service,  it belongs to them.

I need to know that I have some type of Copyright protection.

Glad you and Joe made it home safe. I'd love to read the copyrighted copy of your Cancun experience. I've been watching some tourists on TV sleeping on cold wet floors and eating whatever the natives got. Oh, Mary! I am just happy that you and Joe are back in one piece and survived Wilma.

I can't wait to hear about YOUR experiences ... especially since I don't have to fix yours!  As you know I briefy wrote about a man who was actually in Cozumel when the hurricane hit.  Anyway, I'm eager and ready to hear the story.  I'll be sure to check in for the entry.

Good luck.  I emailed John Scalziwith that question months ago and never heard anything back.

No, you don't. They claim an "umbrella copyright" over ALL material published on their service. They acknowledge your rights are limited -- it was all in the agreement you click OK to when you signed up for a journal. However, several journalers lay specific, prior claim to their materials by first publishing them on their own web page and linking to their published, copyrighted material.

Best advice... if you want to sell your story, don't put it on an AOL site. And get a lawyer experienced in copyright issues.

I'd be careful about that, Mary.  But it sounds like a great tale...  Lisa  :]
